Brian Snuggie Pub Crawl

The "As Seen On TV" blanket with holes for head and arms known as The Snuggie is so uncool. So uncool that you know you secretly want one! Well Snuggie owners can come out of the closet this friday in San Diego for the Snuggie Pub Crawl. I can honestly say that I wish that I could join this coziest of all pub crawls, but alas my Snuggie is

Eli "The Mad Beer Man" Shayotovich Celebrate Repeal Day

Originally posted on the Southern Colorado Beer Examiner site... Celebrate Repeal Day History is full of great moments. It's equally full of not so great moments, and Prohibition was one of this countries not so great moments. Originally posted on the Southern Colorado Beer Examiner site... Search for 2009 Beerdrinker of the Year is underway So you fancy yourself a beer drinker, eh? Do you keep track of every beer you've ever tasted, and every place you've ever been to taste beer? Is your beeresume (beer resume) so heavy that when it hits the table it proudly makes it shudder? Eli "The Mad Beer Man" Shayotovich TGIF SoCo Brew Roundup for 11/21/08

Originally posted on the Southern Colorado Beer Examiner site... TGIF SoCo Brew Roundup for 11/21/08 I've been using the "TGIF SoCo Brew Roundup" moniker for the Friday edition of the SoCoBX colum for a while now. I'm not so enamored with it that I wouldn't change it if a better title came down the pike. So, this is your chance to name Friday's column!… Continue

Brian Beer for President

It happens every election cycle. The stage is just too big for there not to be some that cash in on a timely marketed election-based product. Not that there's anything wrong with that! What could be more American!? The beer industry being no exception has put forth a few frosty selections this fall aimed at the politically minded "Joe Six Pack" or "Joe Pint Glass". The folks at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company located in Pillar Point Harbor in Princeton-b… Continue

NISHA FLOATING WINERY

The purpose of wine tastings and fairs is to expanding our knowledge of wine, tasting the latest vintage, and finding a new gift to take to your next dinner party. Miami International Wine Fair was no different. There were wines representing 15 different countries; countries that I had no idea even made wine. Thailand was on my list of surprises. Siam Winery located about 60km form Bangkok in Samuk Sakoun is Thailand’s oldest and most prized winery. Using only grapes grown in Thailand, Siam Win… Continue

Chris Ryan 2006 Hartenberger Riesling

Medium clear yellow appearance. Nice lemon-petrol nose. Very earthy palate with strong lemon notes and a hint of citrus; nice acidity. Very distinctive, and unlike many of the recent, mostly German, Rieslings I’ve tried. I quite enjoy this one; recommended, particularly at the price, about $20 Canadian. Continue

Daryl Stack The Wine Pod

Is this cool or what? A completely self-contained winery, small enough to fit in your closet. Although the price (around $4500) is a bit hefty, this can turn anyone into a winemaker. The wine pod software controls the entire process. 15 gallons of frozen or fresh, de-stemmed grapes, yeast and other additives will produce about 4 cases of wine. In addition to grapes, the manufacturer, Provina, also sells yeast/additives, testing… Continue

Andrea Wines and ratings

I constantly receive plenty of emails from wine sellers, I guess the moment someone notices that I import and sell wine, they see me as a potential buyer and therefore add my name to their mailing list and I receive emails from all over the world, not only UK based businesses. However, these emails have one thing in common, they always include wine critics’ rating and better than that, they use the ratings to sell the wine. All they say is the name of the wine and the rating, mentioning only th… Continue

Brian Clam Chowder Craving

Not that anyone should care, but, I have a tremendous craving for clam chowder...right now! It's only 9 am as I write this which may seem a bit early in the day to be craving such a meal, but I often eat breakfast for dinner, so I'll just go with it. When I say clam chowder, I mean the good stuff. The kind that usually comes accompanied by the sound and smell of fishing boats, and within sight of a pier. I am fortunate to have eaten at some of the best on both coasts. Sadly I am not anywhere n… Continue

Brian Pirtle Winery Update and a delicious Pumpkin Bread Recipe

The following is reprinted from the Pirtle Winery email Newsletter It's October 15th already and the leaves are changing. We just finished our last press load of grapes three days ago. This ripening season was very late, probably due to a wet spring and early summer. The upside is the excellent grape quality aided by the late, cool harvest conditions. Our grape picker party was very well received (September 20th). There was a lot of everything to eat and drink. Next year I believe we wi… Continue

Brian Judging a Book By It's Cover or a Wine By It's Label

I will be the first to admit that I do in fact judge a book by it's cover. Of course there are other criteria my brain uses to choose my next read, such as the genre, author, reviews, and, well... shelf placement (I am not a huge fan of kneeling), but in the end, the determining factor usually boils down to the cover, and my emotional response to it which either compels me put it down or put it under my arm for a trip to the register. I feel the same about wine. Oh, yes, I occasionally consider… Continue
